NIU women’s tennis: Huskies seek big win at Eastern Michigan

By Northern Star staff

Women’s tennis is seeking to win three conference matches in the same season for the first time since spring 2005.

The Huskies (11-4, 2-1 MAC) will get that opportunity when they travel to the Eastern Michigan Eagles (5-11, 1-2 MAC) at noon Sunday in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Picking up that elusive third conference win this weekend will require the Huskies beating the Eagles for the first time since 2010.

NIU is headlined by senior Nelle Youel, who boasts a 15-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 10-0 record at No. 1 doubles, along with partner Cristina Alvarez. A doubles win will give Youel sole possession of the program’s career doubles wins record; she broke the singles wins record and career combined wins record earlier this season.

The Huskies sit in fourth out of nine MAC teams with five matches to go. The top six teams make the MAC Championships.
