Metra increases onboard penalty fee

Metra has increased its onboard penalty fee from $3 to $5, according to its website.

Part of the funds raised by the fare increase will go toward financing costs of $400 million in bonds to help update Metra’s system, CEO Don Orseno said.

The increase to the onboard penalty is to discourage riders from buying tickets on board trains when ticket agents and vending machines are present at stations, as this diverts conductors from doing their job of overseeing their train, Orseno said.
