Five tips for getting back into school mode

By Marilou Terrones

Sleep. Sleep a lot.

Use your free time to rest so you will have no reason to complain when the hard work rolls in. Though sleeping more than you should on a school day may throw off your schedule, you’ll learn to manage your time wiser, making sure you get five extra minutes before you roll out of bed in the morning.

Finish bindge watching, but don’t start something new.

You want to end in a good place with any series you’ve started watching; otherwise, the curiosity of knowing what will happen in the next episode of “Gilmore Girls” will keep you up at night. Finishing a show will help you be less distracted when you have to choose between homework or another episode.

Force yourself to sit in a quiet place

If you want to be fully immersed in school mode, you must find a place that makes you feel at peace when you need to get work done. You have to be comfortable spending hours in a place — whether it’s the library or your room — so you won’t feel stressed out when you have to stay up late for a test. Activities, such as sitting still or completing a task during one sitting, will become more familiar with practice.

Set your phone on Do Not Disturb or Silent mode.

You’re sitting on your bed studying and your phone vibrates. You glance over, telling yourself you’ll only check your phone to see why it’s ringing. By setting your phone on Do Not Disturb or Silent mode, you will prevent any distractions. Turning on Do Not Disturb is the equivalent of turning off your phone, except the mode makes you feel less anxious about not constantly refreshing your notification feed.

Be productive

Though we’re only a couple of days into the semester, I wish the time in between my classes would be more productive, whether that’d mean waking up earlier or giving myself enough time to have breakfast before class. The more productive you are the more being productive will become a part of your daily routine. Being productive doesn’t always mean getting schoolwork done; being productive means going out of your way to make your day significant rather than ordinary.
