Discover unusual heroes

By Andrew Roberts

Comic companies are getting bolder as they choose which superhero teams to put on the silver screen.

The success of comic book movies has made companies eager to reach into their big bag of characters and pull out the weirdest, the wildest and the wackiest of hero and villain combinations. Here are some teams you may not have heard of:

The Defenders

Though its lineup is always changing, this Marvel “non-team” has consisted of characters deemed to be outsiders to society.

The Defenders’ original members included the Hulk, the rampaging green embodiment of rage; Namor, the ruler of Atlantis and a powerful mutant; Doctor Strange, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme; and the Silver Surfer, a being of cosmic energy who rides a sleek surfboard and can travel in space. These four often had their own agendas and fought among themselves only to come together to battle the occult and mystical foes who plagued this realm.

Alpha Flight

This team is Canada’s government-funded answer to the Avengers. Alpha Flight is comprised of super-powered beings, brilliant scientists and a person who transforms into Sasquatch. Members often had a heritage that tied them to their Canadian backgrounds, such as Inuit and French-Canadian.

When this team first appeared in Marvel comics, it was to introduce the character Wolverine, but it has since become a powerful force its own right. Led by Guardian, an engineer equipped with a powerful battlesuit capable of flight and energy blasts, these heroes fight for the innocent and the Canadian way.

Doom Patrol

The heroic Doom Patrol, much like the Defenders, has members who are treated cruely for their bizarre and terrifying abilities.

The first incarnation of the DC Comics hero team included Negative Man, a man composed entirely of a radioactive “soul” that forces him to hide his physical body in bandages, and Robotman, a scientist who has transplanted his brain into a powerful robotic form. Robotman has been the only recurring Doom Patrol member, as many Doom Patrol alumni have met gristly ends.

The Slingers

The Slingers are a ragtag group of teenagers whose alias was created by Spider-Man. Spider-Man was forced to create four distinct costume personalities when he was accused of murder. Black Marvel, an elder hero of the Golden Age of costume heroics, traded his soul for the costumes in order to give them to the teens and trained the Slingers to fight crime and protect the innocent.
