SA director plans event to clean up campus

Stephanie Norman plans to use her leadership experience in her work as the Student Association’s director of Community Service.

Norma, a sophomore special education major, was unanimously voted in as the director of Community Service by the SA Senate at its Sunday meeting. She is the vice president of her chapter of Circle K International, a student organization focused on community service projects.

Northern Star: What does this position mean to you?

Stephanie Norman: It means that now I can do community service through my organization, Circle K, and collaborate through [SA] Senate, which is very important to me. … Now I get to be the community service director for it so I really get to do what I want with the position.

NS: Do you think it will be difficult to hold both positions?

SN: I think that I’ll definitely be able to handle both. I’m in a lot of organizations and clubs so I’m used to time management, but especially since these are both community service I’m going to do collaborations with Circle K and Alpha Phi Omega and the Residence Hall Association and the Honors Society. … I’ll just make sure that Senate is my focus.

NS: How do you think the experiences with Circle K will help with this position?

SN: I think because I’ve had a year of experience working with Circle K. I know what works and what doesn’t, and I know what events to go to and what events to pass on. I think overall just knowing what will be the best for the group … .

NS: Were there any specific accomplishments from Circle K that might help with this position?

SN: A personal accomplishment was standing up and deciding to be on the executive board. I wasn’t a very active member in the beginning, but I decided to change that and that’s how I got to Senate. I like to speak up in our committee meetings, and by jumping out of that comfort zone I’m more of a part of the bigger picture.

NS: Do you have any specific plans for the position?

SN: I do. I have been collaborating with a few of the senators to volunteer at the YMCA Halloween Party. We are also planning a campus-wide event to clean up similar to Rake Across DeKalb.

NS: Do you foresee any challenges?

SN: I don’t think so. The fact that four senators came up to me at the end of the meeting makes me realize I’m not doing this alone. My only concern is making sure everyone shows up, but this is a very lively and involved group so I think … that won’t be an issue.
