Women’s tennis stalls in season finales

Women’s tennis went winless at home this weekend.

The Huskies lost to the Toledo Rockets (14-3, 5-3 MAC) Friday, 5-2. They also fell to the Eastern Michigan Eagles Saturday, 6-1.

After Friday’s loss, the Huskies were eliminated from the playoffs. The Huskies went into the match needing an undefeated weekend and a little help from other schools in the form of losses from at least two of the teams ranked above them.

Toledo dominated Friday’s match with the Huskies only able to pick two wins in singles play. Nelle Youel knocked off Chrissy Coffman, 6-0, 6-1, and Cristina Alvarez beat Katelyn Nguyen, 6-4, 6-4, for NIU’s only singles wins. In doubles, only Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald could get a win, defeating Lauren Thai and Coffman, 8-6.

Saturday didn’t go any better for the Huskies as they were outscored 6-1 by Eastern Michigan (13-8,6-2 MAC). Youel, who went 2-0 in singles over the weekend, defeated Klara Supejova, 6-0, 6-2. In doubles, Dekkinga and McDonald continued their strong play, holding off Mariya Toncheva and Daphne Friedrichs, 8-7.
