Baseball picks up second win with comeback

Baseball (2-15-1) earned its second victory of the season in come-from-behind fashion, rallying to score five runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat UIC (4-10), 8-7, Tuesday in Chicago.

Infielders Justin Fletcher and Carl Russell started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. After infielder Brian Sisler reached first base on a fielder’s choice, first baseman Alex Klonowski singled to left field, driving in Russell from second to make it a 7-4 game.

After outfielder Brandon Mallder struck out, Chris Divarco pinch hit for Wes Sery, who reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Sisler to score from second base. That cut the Flames’ lead down to 7-5.

With one strike on him, outfielder Landon Tenhagen hit what turned out to be a game-winning three-run homer down the left field line to put the Huskies back on top, 8-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, pitcher Ben Neumann set the Flames down in order to secure the victory for the Huskies.

“I think the guys felt confident. We put up some hits at that point in time, so the goal at that point in time was to try to get the tying run into the batter’s box,” said coach Ed Mathey. “We got some guys on base and started to get some momentum going, and it just kind of fed onto that, so some energy started to get created and the guys all fed off that, too, so it was a great thing to see.”

The Huskies pushed three runs across in the top of the fifth inning. They took advantage of two miscues by the Flames as they walked the leadoff batter, catcher Tommy Hook, and later hit Russell to put runners on first and second base with one out.

Fletcher doubled to left center field, driving in Hook from second base while Russell advanced to third base. Following a Sisler walk to load the bases, Klonowski singled through the left side, moving everyone up a base while driving in Russell.

The next batter, Mallder, followed suit with a single through the right side, driving in Fletcher and moving everyone up a base.

The Flames first got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when outfielder Jake Nath hit a solo shot to left center. They tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run homer by catcher Alex Jurich.

Later in the inning, following a few miscues by the Huskies, the Flames loaded the bases with two outs for their three-hitter, outfielder Tyler Detmer. He cleared the bases with a grand slam to put the Flames up four.

The Huskies recorded 13 hits in the game. Fletcher and Klonowksi each had three hits while Sisler and Tenhagen both recorded two hits.

“I think the big thing is that we’re starting to settle into pitches in the strike zone and hittable pitches,” Mathey said. “I think that we’re seeing the ball a little bit better now. I think this is the second game out of the last three where we put up pretty good hitting numbers. I think we had 17 against Cal Poly there and then this one… . I think this is something that we’re capable of doing, and the guys are having some really good approaches.”
