‘Lightwire’ brightens Egyptian

“Lightwire: The Show” illuminated the stage with storytelling Sunday at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St.

Lightwire Theater is a performance team that uses lights, puppetry, technology and music to create stories. The group was a semi-finalist on season seven of “America’s Got Talent.”

The show featured dancing flowers, sword fights, soaring birds and a damsel in distress. The team used electroluminescent wires to create the images.

“It’s really exciting to be able to bring something like this for the community,” said Alex Nerad, Egyptian Theatre executive director. “It’s about showing the Egyptian Theater can handle all sorts of different things… . It’s fun to bring some of these national touring acts through. It gives people the opportunity to see things they would have to otherwise go into Chicago to see.”

“Lightwire: The Show” filled more than two-thirds of the 1,397 seats in the theater, Nerad said. Nerad said he tried to keep the ticket prices low and thinks that was a reason so many people showed up.

Regular attendees of the Egyptian Theatre found this show exciting and unique from prior performances.

“I’ve seen a lot of events here, and this is the most full I’ve ever seen it,” said Randy Stover, 55, of Maple Park. “The blending of the music with the visuals was done well. It looks like they’re working their asses off.”

Some viewers were fascinated the group could tell a clear story with lights and music.

“I just think it’s so creative, so ingenious how they make it look like the birds were flying up to the stage,” said Ruth Schmid, 70, of Carpentersville.
