Fire Department’s wreath program focuses on safety

The DeKalb Fire Department has launched its annual Red Wreath Program.

The Red Wreath Program started on Thanksgiving when wreaths were placed at the three DeKalb fire stations. Each wreath has red bulbs, and the bulbs are replaced with white ones whenever a holiday-related incident is reported. The goal is to keep the wreaths red.

Last year the wreaths were up for 39 days without any incidents related to the holiday season being reported. During that period, the fire department responded to 570 emergency requests, including 14 fires.

The program started in 1986 as a means to have community attention placed on fire and home safety during the holidays.
