Student Spotlight: Advice: Help out, volunteer on campus

By Jack Manning

Krista Fassola, junior special education major, likes to volunteer and help others almost as much as she likes sushi.

Northern Star: Why did you choose the major that you did?

Krista Fassola: I had a friend who ended up having an aneurism rupture in her brain and she was placed in special ed. I worked a lot with her in junior high because her mom placed her in a lot of the same classes as me. It’s something I grew around and found out that I really enjoy doing.

NS: What is something you are proud of?

KF: Being a hard worker. I have always been very successful if I set my mind to something. I always get stuff done, so I take pride in that and not procrastinating.

NS: What are your plans for the next five years?

KF: Graduating, definitely, finishing up school and probably moving back home for a little bit when I start working just to save some money.

NS: What part of NIU have you liked the most since you have been here?

KF: The amount of organizations that there are on campus. There are definitely a lot of opportunities to get involved, so there is something for everyone to do. I like that they have such a broad range so that no one is excluded from it.

NS: What is something very few people know about you?

KF: I know sign language and am conversationally fluent. I took American Sign Language in high school because I thought it would help with my major.

NS: What is something you would like to do before you die?

KF: I want to go to Africa and work in a poor community for a little bit, help them get resources and educate them. My friend was down there last semester for school, and they did some really cool things.

NS: What advice would you give to fellow students?

KF: Don’t be afraid to go out there and meet people, because I honestly spent my first two years here in my dorm room not doing anything, and then I joined Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Just go out there and do something because it makes being here so much more worth while.
