Fourth of July party? Stick to the classics

By Deanna Frances

Holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter are always a time for entertaining family and friends. The Fourth of July is no exception. With Independence Day just around the corner, some people may plan to throw or attend annual holiday barbecues. If you’re planning on hosting a special celebration this week, here are a few things you’ll need to help you throw the perfect Independence Day barbecue.

Food

Think simple. Everyone wants to throw a party that will impress their guests, but this doesn’t mean you have to go overboard.

Comfort barbecue foods like hot dogs, bratwursts and hamburgers are always crowd favorites. These summer cookout meals are quick and easy to make. Self-serve sides like macaroni salad, potato salad and potato chips will be a perfect pair for your classic meals. In addition, a host can never go wrong with fruits, veggies and classic desserts.

Decorations

When it comes to decorations and scenery, classic red, white and blue decorations can light up any space. Whether you’re throwing a sunlit afternoon barbecue or a late-night dinner while you watch the fireworks, decorations like table centerpieces, tablecloths and flags can be the perfect, simple final touches to your party decor. These items can be found at any local store.

Entertainment

Entertainment is a great part of every party, and you can never go wrong with music, so just plug in your iPod (with appropriate music) and play your background music over the stereo.

Music is a fun addition to make sure your guests are never stuck in boring silence. Entertainment includes games, too. Easy-to-play games like bags, volleyball and horseshoes are fun for all ages and can get your friends and family up and moving at your party.

Now, no matter what you’re doing on the Fourth of July, you have to remember the biggest entertainment: the fireworks. Try to make sure you know where your local fireworks show is and at about what time the show starts. Invite your guests to watch the fireworks. This will be a great ending to your festive party.
