Student Spotlight: Brennan Duffy

By Logan Love

This week’s student spotlight features freshman visual communications major Brennan Duffy.

Northern Star: Why did you choose visual communication as your major?

Brennan Duffy: Well, art is my passion, but jobs in that field are hard to get; either you’re self-employed and sell your art or you teach art. So I chose visual communication because I thought that there would be more job opportunities.

NS: What is something that you’re proud of?

BD: I’m an Evans Scholar, which is a scholarship for caddies who are dedicated and whose parents have a low income. I’m a caddy at Crystal Tree Country Club in Orland Park.

NS: What’s the best tip you ever made being a caddy?

BD: I got $180 one time because I caddied for eight people on one hole.

NS: So is “Caddyshack” your favorite movie?

BD: A lot of caddies go crazy for it, but I’ve seen funnier movies. I like to watch it but I’m not addicted. [My favorite] is “The Godfather” because it teaches you everything you need to know about life.

NS: What’s your plan for the next five years?

BD: Hopefully, to do well in college and graduate with a degree and find a job or internship.

NS: What has been the best part of NIU so far?

BD: Getting to know my fellow Evans Scholars and being away from home.

NS: What’s one thing you would like to do before you die?

BD: I’d like to go deep-sea diving. I like being underwater and seeing the habitats of fish. I think it’s cool how they live in a different world than us.

NS: What’s something very few people know about you?

BD: I’m a third son of a third son of a third son.

NS: What’s the best place on campus?

BD: I like going to the [east] lagoon. I don’t go often, but when I do it’s so peaceful.

NS: What’s the worst part of NIU?

BD: How few sockets there are in the library. Everybody is either along the walls or grouped around one; there need to be more.

NS: What’s one piece of advice you would give to fellow students?

BD: Study.
