How to de-stress during finals

By Josh Alfrey

Time away from the books and in another world can be the difference between a mental breakdown and a happy, healthy student. Here are a couple of games I have found to be a life saver in times of stress.

“LIMBO”

Explore a world of shadow in this dark ambient game that draws in your senses.

As you wander the world of “LIMBO,” you encounter many things that try to kill you, from natives of the wilderness to the wilderness itself. The lack of music emphasizes the sounds of nature. Despite imminent death following you around at every corner, the game is surprisingly relaxing. It is one of the only games I’ve ever played where death may come as a shock, but you come back in the game shamelessly and a little bit smarter.

The game’s simplicity and atmosphere make it one of the most relaxing games I have ever played.

“Tetris Friends”

My go-to game for whenever I am bored, depressed, stressed or frustrated has always been “Tetris.” “Tetris” received a huge facelift after the creation of TetrisFriends.com. Gamers can play classic “Tetris” or challenge friends and strangers alike in the battle arena. This game is a great stress reliever. “Tetris” is such a simple game that it allows you to move your mind and fingers away from the tension in your life. Try listening to your favorite music as you play this classic game and enter your own world. There is something unique and beautiful about the simplicity of this classic game.

Sometimes, video games can induce anxiety, but with the right game you can enter a peaceful zen-like world. When trying to find that right game, consider the goal of the game, the music that creates the atmosphere of the game and the mechanics it takes to play the game. For all of these criteria it is best to keep it simple.

Gaming is the perfect way to relieve that pre- and post-final tension. Next time you feel stressed, pick up one of these games and bring on the relaxation.
