Baseball meets eight games over break

By Brian Earle

Baseball will look to carry over its momentum from its most recent win as it goes into spring break.

Junior Alex Klonowski threw a gem for the Huskies (2-9), as he threw a complete game against Minnesota, allowing just one run on two hits.

The Huskies’ starting pitching has been its identity early on this season, as there have been other quality starts from junior Eli Anderson and freshman Jordan Ruckman.

“This is back-to-back weeks, in my opinion, that we’ve gotten quality starts out of both Eli Anderson and Alex Klonowski,” said coach Ed Mathey in a podcast. “You always like to see some wins associated with quality starts, but those will come if they continue to throw the baseball like that. Both of them went deep into a baseball game, both of them limited damage, both of them were in control of multiple pitches.”

Offensively, the Huskies have been able to get runners on base. However, they have trouble driving in those runs.

“The progression goes, first you gotta get them on base before you can start knocking them in,” Mathey said in the podcast. “So it’s a good news, bad news type of thing. We are getting them on base.”

The Huskies are set to play eight games over the next week. They will play a three-game series against Southern Illinois, a two-game series against Murray State and will then play in the Music City Tournament, where they will play two games against Belmont and one against Lipscomb.

“Southern Illinois is gonna be a tremendous matchup for us,” Mathey said in the podcast. “And then we head down to Murray State for a Tuesday, Wednesday gam,e and what’s going to be interesting about that is that both teams are going to get into some pitching that maybe they haven’t shown a lot yet.”
