Men’s tennis face a busy spring break schedule

The men’s tennis team will head to Milwaukee, Wis., this weekend to face Marquette University (7-5).

The Huskies will be busy during spring break, as they play against three competitive teams in Stetson University (4-0), Appalachian State University (1-6) and Army (8-2).

The Huskies are coming off a win against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis last weekend and will have to let that win carry into the next matchup. Facing these next two weeks is not going to be a walk in the park, said head coach Patrick Fisher.

“We are heading to the toughest part of our schedule,” Fisher said. “Marquette is a very good team, and Stetson is ranked in the top 60 in the nation. It’s going to be a challenge with these teams, and also going from indoor play to outdoor.”

The Marquette Golden Eagles have been on a five-game homestand since Feb. 22 and will conclude their homestand against NIU this weekend. The Eagles are 7-2 at home in the season and the Huskies are 2-2 away from home. These numbers won’t mean anything if the Huskies come ready to play.

“We’re on track,” Fishersaid. “[We] just need to be more consistent in doubles and our four, five and six [spots] need to step up. [The] team needs to just keep on improving; we just have to improve on those two things.”

The last time the Huskies played Marquette was April 8, and the Golden Eagles came out with the win, 4-3.

Over spring break the Huskies will be playing against one of the best teams in the nation in Stetson University. It has a record of 21-3 in singles but a losing record of 4-6 in doubles. If the Huskies expect to pull off an upset they will have to be on their game.

“I have been emphasizing doubles and expecting more focus, attitude and a killer instinct [from players] so we can close out matches,” Fisher said.

After Stetson, NIU will move onto Appalachian State University and Army. Army has a winning record of 8-2 in the season and its team has played a total of 318 matches in singles and doubles in the spring and fall season combined. Appalachian State might be having a losing season but No. 1 player Sebastien King will try to pull the upset against the Huskies’ No. 1 player, Dor Amir.

The next week the Huskies will have their hands full. Even though Fisher knows how tough this upcoming week will be, he’s taking everything one game at a time.

“We just focus on winning every match,” Fisher said. “We go into every match trying to win.”
