No injuries in apartment fire

No one was hurt in a fire reported at 10:37 a.m. today at 921 Normal Road.

Fire Chief Eric Hicks said the DeKalb Fire Department responded to the call with its full complement of service vehicles and had assistance from Sycamore, Cortland and Malta fire departments. The fire was under control in 30 minutes, according to a report from the fire department.

The apartments surrounding the fire in the complex were evacuated by police shortly after the first report, said property owner Jim Mason.

An investigation into the cause of the fire led to the conclusion that the fire started below the apartment’s hot water heater and spread through the floor until the apartment below, according to the report. The estimated cost of the fire was $20,000 in damages.

An overhaul of the affected apartments was completed and the displaced residents are being taken care of by the DeKalb Fire Prevention Bureau and Mason Properties.

Mason said the event was unfortunate and he hasn’t had trouble with the building before.

“Accidents happen,” Mason said. “This is what insurance is for.”
