Women’s tennis defeats Chicago State, continues streak

By Thomas Hiley III

It was another successful weekend for the women’s tennis team, as the players defeated Chicago State (3-9) by a score of 7-0 to give the Huskies their sixth straight win.

In doubles play every pairing was able to come out on top against their opponents. No. 1 pairing Nelle Youel/Arantza De La Torre defeated Karyn Emeralda/Marnie Perez-Ochoa by a score of 8-3 to extend their unbeaten streak in doubles to ten matches.

“We’re getting better and more disciplined,” said head coach Ryun Ferrell. “We feel pretty confident, we’re starting to see less immaturity and more discipline.”

After a clean sweep in doubles, the Huskies continued to apply pressure to the opposition as they swept in singles as well. In the No. 1 spot, Youel won her match against Emeralda 6-1, 6-1 to make it 10 matches in which she hasn’t dropped a set.

“[Youel] is a good student, everything you want from a player. She’s all about action and a great leader,” Ferrell said. “[Emeralda] Chicago’s State’s No. 1 has been good for a few years. The girl [Youel] beat is good, crafty and very well disciplined. [It was] fun to watch.”

Another good matchup came from Mary Malkin, the No. 4 spot in singles, and Viviene Noel. Malkin didn’t let Noel win a game, going 6-0, 6-0 in singles play to make her record 9-1 on the season.

“Malkin played very smart and was nice,” Ferrell said. “She’s finding that discipline.”

Ferrell was pleased with how his team played against Chicago State.

“It was good competing against a real good friend of mine [Chicago State head coach Jack Barton],” Ferrell said. “The team is working really hard and we are doing something we have never done before.”

The Huskies’ next matchup will be March 2 and 3 in Des Moines, Iowa, against Nebraska-Omaha (2-1), Drake University (4-4) and Central Arkansas (4-6).
