Women’s tennis wins big over weekend

The women’s tennis team continues to dominate its opponents by improving to 8-1 on the season after defeating Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, University of Indianapolis, and Butler University this weekend.

The Huskies started the weekend by traveling to Indianapolis to go against IUPUI, beating them, 6-1. NIU started the match by winning doubles in the first and third pairing spots thanks to victories from Nelle Youel/Arantza De La Torre and Mary Malkin/Cristina Alvarez, which gave the team a 1-0 lead going into singles. The Huskies’ only loss in singles came from Bobbi Modesto of IUPUI, who defeated De La Torre in three sets.

After the win against IUPUI, the Huskies faced University of Indianapolis and defeated it 7-0. At the beginning, the Huskies swept all three matches in doubles with the one and two pairing wining with identical scores of 8-2. Going into singles, Youel defeated Allie Smith with a score of 6-1, 6-0, to keep her undefeated streak going. After that first win in singles, the Huskies never looked back and kept the pressure on University of Indianapolis. Spots two through six each won their matches, making it a clear sweep of doubles and singles play for the day.

Heading into their final match of the weekend, NIU went to face Butler and came out victorious to make it a perfect weekend, increasing their overall record to 8-1 on the season. Youel/De La Torre won a close match in doubles 8-6 and Malkin/Alvarez won 8-1 in doubles to give NIU the first point. In singles, the team won five of its six matches to come up with the victory for the day, and left Indianapolis with a 3-0 record for the weekend.

NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell was pleased with how his team played this weekend with the limited amount of rest they received.

“With the schedule it wasn’t as bad as it could be; it was a little more manageable this time,” Ferrell said. “We got better day after day from Friday to Sunday. Friday was good, Saturday came and we got better, and when Sunday came we just executed.”

Even with the 3-0 record, there was still something Ferrell wished NIU could have done better.

“I want consistency from first ball to the last,” Ferrell said. “I like what the team is doing, but we’re still immature. We got a little better discipline day by day.”

The Huskies will look forward to their next opponent on Friday in Rockford against Chicago State.
