The Northern Star staff won six awards at the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) awards ceremony on Saturday.

ICPA awarded Illinois college newspapers based on judges’ reviews of publications that were submitted. The entries had to have been published between Dec. 1, 2011, and Nov. 30, 2012.

The Northern Star staff won second place in the general excellence category for Illinois college newspapers that have a school enrollment of 4,000 or more students. The staff also won second place in the front page layout category.

Editor in Chief Kelly Bauer won first place in the feature page design category. She was also awarded second place in the news story category.

For critical review other than film, Scene writer Sarah Contreras was awarded second place.

Photo Editor Gavin Weaver received third place for his entry in the Shoot Chicago. Photographers from schools in attendance had to take a photograph that pertained to the word “fun.” His photograph featured a couple ice skating in the city.

Sports writer Brian Earle received an honorable mention for a sports column.

The Associated Collegiate Press awards ceremony, a national competition, will take place in the fall.
