‘Mani Cam’ shows trend in nail fashion

I love seeing the Hollywood elite wearing what my favorite designers have lent them for the night from the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards to the Academy Awards–right down to the tips of their fingers.

In the past few years, E! has taken a different approach on taking pictures and interviewing celebrities on the red carpet. E! first added the Glam Cam 360, which takes a 360-degree picture of the celebrity. After the success and buzz that created, E! added the Mani Cam.

This small camera is set up to follow two walking fingers on a hand-sized red carpet. Stars use it to show off their beautiful manicure and jewelry.

The Mani Cam has helped with the sales of nail polishes–because who doesn’t want to wear the same color as their favorite star?

“Azature founder Azature Pogosian has been swamped with inquiries about the $250,000 bottle of nail polish and its $25 equivalent that Kelly Osborne wore to the Emmys,” FashionIndie.com said. “The exposure has caused the affordable $25 version of the nail polish to sell out at Fred Segal and Ron Robinson.”

Zooey Deschanel is known for her nail art; she always arrives with creative designs that fit in with the ceremony she is attending.

“…Deschanel paid tribute to Old Hollywood with a retro film strip manicure by celebrity nail man-icurist Tom Bachik,” HuffingtonPost.com said. “The ivory, gold and black nail art design included a vintage camera on her ring finger.”

The unique nail trend has spread to NIU.

“I am always looking to be different and more unique with my nails than the average girl,” said junior broadcast journalism major Brittany Merleau. “I like to set trends with my nails. So I will take an idea and spin it in my own way and continuously change it up.”

Merleau said a manicure is her major outlet for fashion self-expression.

“People say they express themselves through tattoos and other things,” Merleau said. “I do not have any tattoos–the way I express myself is through my nails.”
