Men’s basketball to host Loyola Saturday

By Brian Earle

While everyone will be at home over Thanksgiving break, NIU men’s basketball will be taking care of business when they host the Loyola Ramblers on Saturday.

This will be the second of a three game home stand for NIU.

The Huskies (1-2) are coming off their first win of the season, after defeating Judson, 72-54 on Sunday.

NIU was led by a pair of freshmen on offense in guard Akeem Springs and forward Sam Mader who each scored 16 points.

Springs has played well so far this season as he leads the Huskies with 11 points a game.

The Huskies really played well on the offensive glass as they out-rebounded Judson 38 to 19. They also took care of the ball as they only turned the ball over nine times.

The Ramblers (3-2) are coming off a win in their final game of the USF Invitational over Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-46.

Loyola was led by senior forward Ben Averkamp, who scored 27 points and also recorded eight rebounds.

Averkamp is the Ramblers leading scorer this season, as he averages 18.3 points per game while shooting 500 percent from the field in 28.3 minutes a game.

Averkamp also leads the team in rebounding, averaging seven a game.

Freshman forward Matt O’Leary is Loyola’s second highest scorer this season, as he averages an even 10 points per game.

The Ramblers prefer to stay inside with Averkamp and O’Leary as they lead the team in shots taken.

Loyola has already faced two MAC foes, defeating Toledo in its season opener, 62-50, before falling to Western Michigan 81-71.
