School of Theatre and Dance to host holiday variety show

If you haven’t noticed by the decorations and eggnog-flavored everything coming out in stores, it’s time to get into the holiday spirit.

The NIU School of Theatre and Dance will be participating in the holiday fever by presenting its Under the Mistletoe holiday variety show.

The show is full of family-friendly, upbeat content in the form of songs, skits and dances.

“It’s a combination of Christmas-themed comedy sketches and holiday songs,“ said co-director and graduate acting student Suzanne Schmidt.

The show aims to bring on the laughter with its mixture of traditional holiday stories and the digital age.

“There are sketches involving three wise men and their faulty iPhone navigation, Santa crashing in DeKalb and setting up shop here in order to make the Christmas deadline, a news interview with the Bethlehem innkeeper who gave his stable to Mary and Joseph, Fame school for elves and much more,” Schmidt said.

Along with the laughing and fun, a tribute to American troops who are unable to be with their families this holiday season will also be incorporated into the show.

One of the holiday’s biggest celebrities, Santa Claus, will be available for pictures before the show. There will also be gift baskets raffled off at each performance.

Under the Mistletoe will run at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 8 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Corner Theatre in the Stevens Building. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling the box office at 815-753-1600.
