Women’s soccer strives for consistency

So far this season, the offensive production has been either a case of feast or famine for NIU’s women’s soccer.

Through 11 games, the Huskies are averaging just over a goal a game. That can be a bit deceiving, as seven of those goals have come in just two games: a 4-1 win over the South Dakota and a 3-0 win over Loyola.

NIU has been led by the emergence of junior mid-fielder/forward Cori Frankenberg. She has played in all 11 games this season and leads the team in both goals and assists with four in each category.

Freshman mid-fielder Sara Spaulding is second on the team in goals with two on the season.

The Huskies have won all of their other games 1-0 against SIU-Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois, and most recently Akron this past Friday.

NIU has been shut out four times already this season. Consistency is something that the Huskies will need to have if they want their successful season to continue.

“You know, I just think it’s going to start with training on Tuesday,” said John Ross, NIU women’s soccer coach. “And us, just going back to the basics with our team attack and just making sure we’re doing the little things. If we do the little things we’ll create quality opportunities and put our players in positions where they can score goals and then from there just taking advantage of those opportunities.”

If the Huskies are to become more consistent offensively it is something that will take a whole season and not just happen overnight. It will take all team effort in their final seven regular-season games.

“From here on out we just going to focus on the next games coming up,” Spaulding said. “And I think it’s the little things that we got to focus on, like connecting the ball, you know, 50-50 balls and connecting with the midfield and forwards. I think that’s just something we got to work on to, you know, capitalize on those goals we should be capitalizing on.”
