DeKalb shows holiday spirit with Halloween decorations

Halloween is all about having the most creepy decorations out for display and DeKalb residents and business owners participated in spreading the holiday spirit.

DeKalb resident Karen Lindemann said she decorates every year.

“I just enjoy picking stuff up; I pick most stuff up at garage sales and some at stores like Spirit,” Lindemann said. “I have actually cut back this year.”

Creating a spooky environment can sometimes be a family tradition for citizens of DeKalb.

“My stepdad has done this since he was little,” said DeKalb resident Chance Ramirez. “He’s had most of this stuff his whole life.”

DeKalb businesses have even joined in the fun of decorating for the season.

Betsy Hendrey and her husband took over The Confectionary, 149 N. Second St., at the beginning of the year and have plans for expanding on their Halloween decorations often.

“We wanted to do more,” Hendrey said. “Every year we plan to add to it.”

Hendrey said what they did have–hanging light-up lanterns and balloons–added to the spirit of the event when trick-or-treaters came by on Saturday.

Out on a Whim, 127 E. Lincoln Highway, also had decorations up for the holiday. Owner Ken Weinstock also owns the Blue Moon Balloon Company. Weinstock said he uses the balloons from thatbusiness to decorate his shop windows.

“If I stopped putting some out, people on Facebook would start to get uptight with me,” Weinstock said. “I make time for the holidays because they are just a blast.”
