Soccer teams want lights

On the days when it reaches close to triple digits outside and all you want to do is sit in the air conditioning and do nothing, men’s or women’s soccer is outside practicing or competing.

Why? There are no lights at the stadium for either team to practice at night.

Both men and women’s soccer agree that they want to play under the lights for multiple different reasons.

“I prefer night games over day games because they are more exciting and more of a thrill when you are under the lights,” said defense mann Lauren Eberts. “If we had lights, it would give the students a better chance to come and cheer us on.”

Women’s soccer coach John Ross agrees that more people would go to games, which would create a good atmosphere, if the field had lighting.

“The fans will definitely help and give a better atmosphere out there for us, by them being out there to cheer us we have more of a confidence,” Ross said. “Anytime you see the lights on it has a special feeling. To me, it reminds me of Monday Night Football. Look how special that was and still is to this day.”

Head men’s soccer coach Eric Luzzi looks at the light situation in a different way. He believes that having practice at night would help improve his team.

“Right now, we have our practices at noon, so the light situation doesn’t affect us,” Luzzi said. “But adding them would mean we could have more practices. During the day we have kids who are late to practice or leaving early from practice due to classes. Lights would allow us to have a full team practice and an overall better team.”
