Nonprofit day to be held for education

DeKALB | Many agencies will come together to celebrate Nonprofit Day on Wednesday.

“Nonprofit day is a workshop that has occurred three years before by leaders in the nonprofit community to offer resources and training to other area nonprofits,” said Anita Zurbrugg , program director for the DeKalb County Community Foundation .

Zurbrugg said students could benefit from attending Nonprofit Day.

“I think it’s not a common experience for students to know how nonprofits impact them directly and the resources that help them,” Zurbrugg said.

Nancy Castle , acting director of NGO Leadership Development Center and Service-learning Facilitator of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning , will be one of the speakers at Nonprofit Day for the second year in a row.

“I’m going to talk about the variety of ways nonprofits might have NIU students in their agencies,” Castle said.

Castle said nonprofit agencies might have students work as interns, co-ops or in the field placement area.

“We want a nonprofit fair to let students know what nonprofits do,” Castle said.

Castle will also look for feedback from the nonprofit agencies in attendance.

“On campus, we may have 30 classes where we’re sending students to contact the director of an agency, for example,” Castle said. “There needs to be some way we could be more efficient and organized about it.”

Zurbrugg said this year’s Nonprofit Day will be focusing more on nonprofit board development. According to the Center for Civic Partnerships , nonprofit boards keep the organization financially on-track, develop an organized policy and make sure the organization’s mission is fulfilled.

It is DeKalb Public Library’s first time participating in Nonprofit Day, said Dee Coover, director of the DeKalb Public Library.

The DeKalb Public Library will be hosting a Resource Center during Nonprofit Day where they will have databases and books to help nonprofit agencies.

Coover said one of the subjects the DeKalb Public Library hopes to cover is nonprofit agencies applying for grants.

“We’re excited,” Coover said. “It’s a wonderful new opportunity for us.”
