Frye, track and field will try to continue success versus Lee Calhoun

NIU track and field will be in action over the weekend as they head to Macomb for the 23rd annual Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational.

The Huskies are coming off a victory last weekend at the Chicagoland Intercollegiate Championships. NIU had six event titles and several top-five finishes last week.

Connie Teaberry, NIU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, said winning last week didn’t change what the team has done in practice .

“We use practice to fine tune some things that we see that we might have gotten wrong in competition,” Teaberry said. “We need capitalize on some things that we need to improve on, but mostly, we work on the same things every week; like handoffs and takeoffs.”

Roneisha Frye, who is coming off a first place in 100 hurdles, said she knows she can still do better even though she took first place in the 100 hurdles.

“In the hurdles, I want to run faster then I did last week,” Frye said. “Hopefully I can run under 13.6 to ensure my spot in the NCAA regionals and better my times overall. My confidence is a little higher, but not too confident because anything can happen in track and the confidence with the team is also higher.”

Teaberry said her expectations for her runners is still high.

“Every weekend our expectations are high for the girls,” Teaberry said. “I tell the girls that I am their biggest fan. I see what they do in practice each day. I aspect them to give 110 percent the moment they step on the track.”
