Say goodbye to flip flops

By Mellissa McKenna

Whether you love it or hate it, fall has indeed arrived.

Gone are the days spent lounging by the poolside while attempting to soak up more than the recommended amount of vitamin D. Say goodbye to jean shorts and Ray-Bans, or flip flops and tank tops; for summertime has left the building. Left with only a crisp tan in memory of what once was, it’s time to stock up on all the newest fall wardrobe essentials. This fall, there is a plethora of fabulous new looks that fit just about anyone’s style preference. From snakeskin to mosaic patterns and military coats to button down cardigans (yes, you boys are included), your wardrobe should never have a chance to be anything but exciting and on target.

Keeping up with all the latest “it” trends can sometimes be a tedious task. With hundreds of prints, cuts, styles and washes it’s easy to want to just give up on fashion altogether and opt for a big trash bag. If that’s the place where you currently find yourself, step away from the Hefty Tall Kitchen and take a deep breath. Consider me your personal stylist, here to transform your closet into a hot mess of fall clothes.

Animal Prints

This season, any and all kinds of animal prints are what’s hot in fashion. From sweaters to skirts and shirts, animal print can add a touch of fun to any outfit. A tip from the wise: Use animal print sparingly. Too much of a good thing can turn an outfit into an overdone disaster zone.

Lace

Girly and delicate, lace can be your best friend to dress up any outfit. Add a little bit or a lot o’ bit.

Dark Wash Jeans

I’m a strong believer in the notion that everyone looks better in dark wash jeans. Simply put, they’re more slimming, flattering and appealing. Wear dark wash and you can’t go wrong.

Platform Wedges

Sexy and simple, platform wedges are not only comfortable but look stunning with almost every outfit. Buy a good pair and they will no doubt be a staple in your everyday wardrobe.

Freshman Veronica Minor shared with me what her closet looks like this season.

“My wardrobe consists of a lot of neutral colors and staple pieces,” said Minor. “I love blazers, bold shoes, and BDG Pull-On Flare Jeans from Urban Outfitters. I also accessorize a lot of my outfits with statement jewelry and scarves.”

Now, it’s time to switch gears and focus on what sometimes needs the most attention. Boys, I haven’t forgotten about you, I’m simply saving the best for last. Men’s fall fashion is stepping up its game this year by creating a newer, more polished oxford look. Varsity cardigans, cable knit sweaters, rocker blazers, and plaid (thats right, plaid) are just some of the trends among many that men should be sporting this fall.

The classic button down

It’s virtually a no-brainer. Throw on a well-fitting button down and roll up the sleeves, and you’re good to go. Try to buy neutral colors that can be layered under a sweater or worn on top of a V-neck tee.

Crew-neck and V-neck shirts

They’re cheap, versatile, and just look plain good. Long sleeve or short sleeve, worn alone or layered under a sweater or button down, these shirts should be a staple in any boy’s wardrobe.

Boot-cut jeans

A boy can’t go wrong with a good pair of boot-cut jeans. Take it from a girl’s perspective and steer clear from torn, whiskered, or acid-wash jeans. Go straight for boot-cut or straight-leg and don’t look back. Just make sure you try them on before you buy the jeans. Just because a pair of jeans looks like it will fit you doesn’t mean it necessarily will.

This fall, plan on looking good and dressing to impress with little-to-no effort. It’s all about mixing and matching and finding what looks best for your own personal style. Fashion is all about creativity and versatility, so don’t be afraid to switch things up and try out something new; you may surprise yourself and create a whole new trend.
