Fire chief says “culmination of minor issues” causes building condemnation

Fire Chief Bruce Harrison said that the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house has “dramatically improved their premise already” since being condemned nearly a month ago.

Harrison said the next inspection will be in early July, around the time the rest of the rooming houses are looked through.

When DeKalb fire officials inspected the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house in May, red flags were raised due to “garbage, painting and wiring issues…and a broken window,” Harrison said.

Since the inspection and decision to condemn the house, however, Harrison said he expects the house’s problems will be taken care of come July.

“My expectation is they’ll be in full compliance for the inspection in early July,” Harrison said.

None of the issues with the building were major concerns, but Harrison said “a culmination of minor issues as opposed to a major deficiency in the building” led to the fraternity house being condemned. Initially, fire officials responded to a report of a fire at the house and came across various code violations afterward.

Dan Facchini, president of PIKE Alum LLC, which is the housing corporation that rents the building from the owner, said he has yet to enter the house.

“There will be a fire inspection in July in preparation to open up in August,” Facchini said. “We’re doing whatever it takes to prepare for that fire inspection.”

Facchini said “the house was pretty much closed down for the summer” around the time the fire department decided to shut it down.

The biggest relief was that none of the members of the fraternity were hurt, since most members move out of the house before summer starts, Facchini said.

“We’re very pleased nobody got hurt and there was no significant damage to the building,” Facchini said.
