Kishwaukee Hospital offers classes to keep kids safe

DeKALB | The Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 1 Kish Hospital Drive, is offering several classes to promote safety for children.

Margaret Dohnalik, Community Wellness Coordinator, said the classes include the safe-sitter program, the infant safety and CPR class, the prepared childbirth class and the new baby care class.

“The topics covered in the safe-sitter program range from how to care for the children to who you should baby-sit for,” said Dohnalik. “The safe-sitter program does not advocate door-to-door promotion of one’s baby-sitting services. For safety reasons, it should be someone you know and trust.”

The safe-sitter program costs $40 per person and the next class will be starting on June 4.

The infant safety and CPR class teaches new parents how to baby-proof their home, poison control, as well as teaching the skills of CPR but is not a certification course, Dohnalik said.

CPR certification is available for $45 and the next available class is May 9, said Rene Olsen, Training Center and EMS assistant.

The infant safety and CPR class costs $15 a couple and the next class begins April 7.

Another class offered is the prepared childbirth class, which teaches everything up to and including the delivery of the baby, Dohnalik said.

“We teach what to expect as far as the changes in the body and how to properly prepare for the delivery of the baby,” Dohnalik said.

The prepared childbirth is either a five week course or a one weekend intense course. The next five week course begins on April 13 and the next weekend course begins on April 23. The cost is $75 a couple.

Also offered is the new baby care class, which costs $14 per couple.

“The new baby care class covers everything from diapering and feeding to caring and nurturing for your new baby,” said Dohnalik.

The new baby care class will be offered April 21.
