Devon Butler’s condition has been upgraded from serious to stable, according to personnel at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

A spokesperson said, as of early Monday evening, Butler was responsive, but would not give any other details.

Butler posted his first Facebook status in regards to the April 5 shooting that initially left him in critical condition. A post from him late Monday morning said, “Thanx for all the luv! I’m doing fine and will b[e] up [and] running [i]n no time! Just keep praying for me. Sckoop.”

Butler, a middle linebacker for NIU, was shot in the back April 5 at the apartment of the friend’s house. DeKalb Police described Butler as being at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was hit.

Two NIU students, Mark Orozco and Richard Van Arsdale III, have been arrested in relation to what DeKalb Police call a “bad drug transaction” which culminated in Tuesday night’s shooting.

Orozco and Van Arsdale have each been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, both punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

They also have been charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and one count of the unlawful delivery of cannabis, punishable by up to three years in prison.
