‘Friends’ raise money for DeKalb library programs

DeKALB | The Friends of the Library are holding a book sale this week to benefit the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St.

Books, CDs, audio books, cassettes, records and VHS tapes are $1 or less. DVDs are $2.50.

The Friends of the Library have a book sale several times a year.

“The sale begins the fourth weekend of every second month,” said Marge Dumstorf, circulation librarian and past president of the Friends of the Library.

The current sale began Saturday and goes through Thursday and runs during normal library hours. The sales raise several thousand dollars a year and all proceeds go to the library.

“It looks like we will equal about $3,000 to $3,200 for the year,” Dumstorf said.

The library uses the money raised from the sale to pay for several projects.

“The support from the Friends [of the Library] helps fund many programs, especially the summer reading program,” said Teresa Iverson, DeKalb Public Library reference department manager. “We wouldn’t be able to have the summer reading program we have without the contributions.”

The proceeds also fund other projects around the library.

“We help buy books, equipment, programming, whatever they ask us for,” Dumstorf said.

DeKalb resident Larry Price said the book sale is a good thing.

“I think books should be recycled if they can,” Price said.

Additionally, those who join Friends of the Library as well as current members get a free hardcover book.

“We currently have 40 to 50 members,” Dumstorf said. “Our operating costs are less than $100 a year and all further proceeds go directly to the library.”
