Campus crime blotter for Feb. 22

Thursday

At 9 p.m., a case of possession of cannabis 30 grams and under occurred at Grant South. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 9:03 p.m., an officer responded to a report of criminal damage to state supported property in a men’s restroom at the Holmes Student Center. There are no leads. This case is administratively closed.

At 11:06 p.m., a case of illegal consumption by a minor and other disorderly conduct occurred at Grant Drive North and Grant Drive East. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 11:59 p.m., a case of battery was reported at Stevenson South. This case is pending investigation.

 

Friday

At 12:35 a.m., a case of illegal consumption by a minor occurred at Grant North. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 1:31 a.m., a case of illegal possession by a minor occurred at 800 Greenbrier Road. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 12:40 p.m., cases of illegal possession by a minor and possession of drug equipment occurred at Douglas Hall. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 1:05 p.m., cases of illegal possession by a minor, possession of cannabis under 30 grams and possession of drug equipment occurred at Douglas Hall. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 2:08 p.m., officers responded to a situation regarding a banned subject. The person was identified as James Brown, 18, of Chicago, who was banned from NIU property. Brown was arrested for criminal trespass to land and transferred to DeKalb County Jail after failing to post bond.

At 3:39 p.m., an officer responded to a complaint about a wallet that was stolen or mislaid from Lincoln Hall. At this time the case is pending investigation.

At 10:53 p.m., a case of illegal possession by a minor occurred at Douglas Hall. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 11:15 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Lincoln Hall for a reported odor of burnt cannabis. Upon investigation and search, officers recovered a small glass mason-jar located in a small cubby hole of the desk unit. Four small baggies of a green leafy plant-like substance, consistent with that of fresh cannabis were revealed. Cedric Burkett, 19, of Joliet, was placed under arrest for unlawful possession of cannabis 30 grams and under and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

At 11:17 p.m., an officer on patrol passed an individual later identified as Joel Araiza, 22, of Romeoville, who had an active warrant for his arrest. Araiza was transported back to the NIU Police Department for booking. During the booking process, cocaine was found in his shoe. Araiza was charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken to the DeKalb County Jail.

Saturday

At 12:11 a.m., a case of illegal possession by a minor occurred at 900 Greenbrier Road. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 12:25 a.m., a case of illegal possession by a minor occurred at 800 W. Hillcrest Drive. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 1:52 a.m., a case of illegal consumption by a minor occurred at Douglas Hall. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 1:56 a.m., a case of illegal consumption by a minor occurred at Stevenson North. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

At 2:27 a.m., a vehicle was recorded speeding at 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. The vehicle was stopped and cannabis was found on the passenger’s person. The driver gave voluntary consent to search the vehicle and no other contraband was found. The person with the cannabis voluntarily destroyed it and was given a warning for unlawful consumption of alcohol and possession of cannabis. The driver was then given a verbal warning for speeding.

At 10:11 p.m., an officer while on a building check in Grant South noticed three individuals inside a room with the door open. Alcoholic beverages were in plain view on a table in the room. After requesting identification, all three individuals produced valid driver’s licenses and proved to be under the legal drinking age of 21. All three individuals admitted to drinking the alcoholic beverages and were advised to dispose of the liquor contained within the room. All three complied with the request and were given a verbal warning for possession of alcohol by a minor.

At 10:29 p.m., a case of illegal consumption by a minor occurred at Stevenson North. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

Sunday

At 1:15 a.m., a case of illegal possession by a minor occurred at Hillcrest Drive and Normal Road. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.
