Art enthusiasts, history buffs, and women all over the community volunteer their time and talents at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St.

This all-volunteer non-profit organization offers a wide variety of events and programs throughout the year, geared towards women’s interests.

“The DeKalb Area Women’s Center is a location that values women and I think that sets us apart from much of society,” said Board Director Anna Marie Coveny. “Our purpose is in programming and providing a location for activities.”

Most recently, the organization held a Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil.

In November the center will hold its annual Winter Coat Drive and in December it will have its Holiday Shopping Fair.

“Each month we have a different art show or museum collection,” Coveny said. “What we’re really doing here is connecting with the community by showing historic exhibits or promoting local artists.”

The different exhibits feature local artists’ works or historical artifacts from the community. A reception follows after the exhibits.

“We’re the only one organization of its kind in the area,” said Joan Popp, retired NIU professor and tennis coach.

Popp worked at NIU for 36 years and taught in the Physical Education and Kinesiology Department.

Popp said she considers herself an advocate for equality in women’s sports.

Mary von Zellen also a board director, got involved with the Women’s Center because it was a way for her to show her civic participation and be a part of the community.

“I think you have to give an authentic self-presentation,” Zellen said. “We promote self-actualizing activities and behavior and maximizing people’s potential.”
