NIU student attacked

The investigation into the attack of a female student early Saturday morning continues, said NIU Police Sgt. Alan Smith. Smith said police are currently following up on leads on the case but declined to give further comment.

According to the NIU Today website, a female student reported she was attacked while walking alone around 1 a.m. Saturday near Eco Park and Lot W on the NIU campus.

The attacker, who is described as male and possibly of Hispanic or Indian origin, was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was approximately 5’8″ tall, with a medium build with a spiked, mohawk haircut, the NIU Today release said.

In attempts to defend herself, the victim hit the attacker and may have left a mark on his neck.

The NIU Department of Public Safety is seeking any information regarding this incident and asks anyone who may have seen a person fitting the attackers description to call 815-753-1212 or 815-753-TIPS.

The attack comes days after DeKalb Police charged a suspect with the murder of Antinette “Toni” Keller.

Smith said police noticed less incident reports before William P. Curl was taken into custody. Smith said police don’t want to see students abandon the precaution before Curl was arrested.

“This campus is safe but we also want students to take the necessary steps to remain safe,” Smith said.

Smith stressed the need for students to take advantage of the services offered by the university. Smith said students should always use the buddy system and take advantage of the Huskie Patrol and the Late Night Ride.

“We don’t want to see students get complacent now that the alleged suspect has been taken into custody,” he said.
