Facebook can act as a tool to raise awareness

By Letter Writer

I thought Katie Trusk’s article about Facebook statuses and Breast Cancer Awareness was completely contradictory and somewhat insulting. The fact that she took the time to write a perspective article about the current Facebook awareness campaign proves how effective our statuses are!

Men ask about them, women ask about them, and in return awareness is raised. Last time I checked, talking about a situation is exactly what creates awareness. Katie’s quote “awareness only works when you do something about your cause” is pretty ignorant and blatantly false, and taking a jab at the people with these statuses is uncalled for, calling me stupid for having a status that creates breast cancer awareness?

Who looks stupid now?

Get out of the house and do something?

I’m sorry that in between my completely packed class schedule and job and midterms I’m not swimming in time to actually participate in an event, but I do have five minutes to update my Facebook status and spread the word about getting yourself checked when someone inquires about it.
