Colette Wehrli, freshman accountancy major, and Megan Szmyd, freshman undecided major, focused their room in Douglas Hall around the personal touches.

They said that they wanted to make their room a summary of themselves, and that is exactly what freshman accountancy major Colette Wehrli and freshman undecided major Megan Szmyd have done to their Douglas room.

While their personal touches are shown throughout the room, they are most apparent in their pictures that cover the bulletin boards and line their walls.

Szmyd has created two artistic posters that hang above her bed to remind her of her friends.

“I just picked stuff I like or stuff that’s important to me,” Szmyd said. “I took pictures from my trips out of the country and pictures of my friends and glued them all together. It’s a really good way to have people close to me even though they’re far away.”

Wehrli has filled her bulletin board with numerous pictures of her friends and family as well.

“I tried to get at least one picture of all my friends on there,” Wehrli said.

The room also features a soft carpet provided by Wehrli’s uncle.

“My uncle owns a floor store, instead of giving a graduation gift to any of his nieces or nephews, he gives you a square of carpet for your dorm room,” Wehrli said. “It’s nice because for some reason everyone thinks of the carpet as this really special thing. No one wants to spill and is super careful in our room.”

In addition to the numerous pictures and the carpet, the room contains custom curtains, custom bulletin board covers and a bed skirt all sewn by Wehrli’s mom.

“I would say my mom put a lot of time into decorating our dorm room,” Wehrli said. “But it didn’t feel like I put in a lot at all.”

Szymd said organizing was the most time-consuming.

“It took awhile to get stuff organized at the beginning, but other than that we didn’t spend too much time on it,” Szymd added.

Wehrli and Szmyd said that they are both really happy with how their room has turned out.

“It is still a dorm room,” Szmyd said. “But it’s as close to a home away from home as you can get.”
