You put on the costumes, they’ll put on a show

Trick-or-treating is for losers. Instead, this Halloweekend, have your face melted by live music.

Now in its sixth year, the premiere event of the weekend is The House Cafe’s, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, Halloween Extravaganza. The all-ages show starts at 7 p.m. and costs $8.

For one night a year, some of the most prominent musicians in the area pay tribute and transform into their favorite bands.

This year the line-up of tributes include The Smashing Pumpkins by Astral Guard, Black Sabbath by Suns, Outkast by State Champs, Blondie by Wolf Nation, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs by Caught In Your Pockets, The Toadies by Roboggan, Saves The Day by Joie De Virve and Rage Against The Machine by Geronimo and John Ugolini.

Ugolini, owner of Kickstand Productions, said the show was booked 6 months in advance because there were so many requests to play. Usually, there’s a friendly-yet-competitive vibe between bands, with everyone trying to one-up each other and steal the show.

Decatur Fist, a local, one-night-only quartet, will pay tribute to the legendary alternative band The Pixies. They’ve been getting into the Boston band’s mentality by watching performances on YouTube and live DVD’s, picking up the band’s nuances and hand placements.

Esther Espino, junior art history major, will transform into Kim Deal, the ferocious Pixies bassist and singer. Although she said she’s not the biggest fan of the Oct. 31 holiday, she’s looking forward to the excuse of making a spectacle of herself on-stage.

“This is the first Halloween I’ve been excited about since I was 11,” she said.

This will mark fellow Decatur Fist member Patrick Kelly’s fourth time performing at the Halloween Extravaganza after previously paying tribute to The Clash, Modest Mouse and WWF theme songs.

“This is probably the most outrageous show, as far as everyone having a good time, everyone’s in costumes and a lot of drinks are being had,” Kelly said. “It’s the most fun thing I’ve been a part of. Even if I wasn’t playing, I wouldn’t miss this show for the world.”

Another huge show this weekend is Cealed Kasket’s triumphant return tonight to Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln Highway. The 21+ show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $7.

Fronted by Mortal Death, the self-proclaimed “Jesus Christ of Death Metal,” and backed by guitars from Sir Sarsicus, a 500-year-old wizard, this dark age death metal band is known for its music as it is for its stage show. Expect there to be lots of dragon slayings, sword-in-the-stone pulling and general debauchery.

“A Cealed Kasket show is kind of like going to Medieval Times and having a hair metal band encourage you to drink heavily and play-fight with plastic weapons,” Ugolini said.

Kicking off the Halloweekend is Woe Is Me, an experimental sextet hailing from Atlanta, Ga., who will play The House tonight at 6 p.m. Tickets are $8.
