Fire alarm sounds in McMurray Hall, malfunction suspected

By Northern Star Staff

A malfunctioning fire alarm is suspected to have caused an alarm in McMurry Hall to go off late Wednesday afternoon.

NIU Police Sgt. Alan Smith said no fire was detected in the building. The alarm disrupted at least one class taking place on the third floor of the building. Assistant professor Daniel Boutin and about 25 students from his Introduction to Rehabilitation Services class were waiting outside McMurry while the fire alarm went off.

Boutin said the alarm went off a little after 4 p.m. and he did not smell any smoke while evacuating.

DeKalb firefighters were seen leaving the building at 4:40 p.m.
