DeKALB | Friday night, freshman Sarah Angelos played a volleyball match without her twin sister, Amy, on the court for the first time.

Tonight will be Sarah’s first match playing across the net from Amy as the Huskies (4-0) take on Bradley (2-1) at Victor E. Court.

“Ever since we committed, we’ve been talking about this match and talking smack,” Sarah said. “It’ll be fun playing against her instead of playing on the same side.”

The Waukegan, Ill. natives have grown up playing every sport together and pushing each other to be better, said their mother Joy.

“They’ve always played together,” Joy said. “They figure skated when they were younger and competed. But it’s been a pretty healthy competition; they push each other.”

Joy said basketball was actually the first love of both girls, but during their sophomore year in club volleyball the switch was made and both progressed in volleyball as middle blockers.

“They are naturally athletic,” Joy said. “No one in our family has been a volleyball player previous to this; [it] is all new territory. They’ve decided this is what they want to do and worked hard at it.”

While the twins will look to outplay each other on the court, their parents have expressed the neutrality coming from the stands.

“Everybody’s asking us who we’re going to cheer for,” Joy said. “I’m just going to sit in the middle and clap for everything.”

Joy said she will also be dressed neutrally. In preparation for the match, she cut both a Bradley and NIU shirt in half and sewed them together. Their father Tom has not yet decided if he is going to wear the other halves of the shirts or sport a hat and jacket combination. But he is looking forward to seeing a crowd full of familiar faces.

“There’s so many of their friends that are going to come and people that have been influential in their lives to this point that will be here,” Tom said.

Tonight’s match will remind the Huskies that Sarah is a twin, something she has had to get accustomed to.

“In the beginning of our recruiting process we were always like we are going to go to separate schools,” Sarah said. “We are going to be our own individual. It’s a good thing, but it’s different not being with your twin sister. It’s weird being somewhere and people not know that I’m a twin.”
