Freshman Firsts

By Katie Leb

College freshmen tend to go unnoticed unless they put themselves in the spotlight. Make the freshmen athletes behind all-star upperclassmen, and they may feel like no one can see them.

Every week “Freshman Firsts” will be here to shine a light on those accomplishments that may end up being the most significant in an athlete’s career.

Women’s Soccer: Amy Carr

In her first start at goalkeeper during the season-opener on Aug. 23, Carr recorded her first save and played the full 90 minutes. But most impressively, she notched her first shutout as a Huskie.

“I came off the [field] and one of the girls said to me ‘your first shutout,’ and I was like ‘is that good or bad?’ because what we call it in England is a clean sheet,” Carr said of the game. “So I learned a new [term] there.”

Volleyball: Lauren Wicinski

When the Huskies kicked off the season against Chicago State in the NIU Invitational on Friday, Wicinski proved she belongs on the court. Wicinski served her first ace and got her first kill, dig and block. She would go on in the tournament to do a lot more than that, but it was her first match that she focused on getting through.

“I was super nervous because it was my first time on the floor, but I was really excited,” she said. “I just wanted to help my team.”
