NIU braves Bradley for 5th straight win

DeKALB | Three is a good number for the Huskies when the Bradley volleyball team is involved. For the third time in three years, the Huskies (5-0) beat the Braves (2-2) in only three sets Tuesday evening.

The win continues the NIU’s success, sending the team on the road with a perfect home stand and beginning to the season.

“It’s great to be in this spot,” head coach Ray Gooden said. “It’s great to feel like we’re playing pretty good volleyball. And it was great to end our home stand on a really positive note.”

Early in the match, the Huskies went back and forth on the scoreboard, after missing several serves and potential kills before taking game one 25-14, followed by 25-17 and 25-15 wins.

“Making errors is something we definitely do not want to be doing,” said middle blocker Sarah Angelos. “The errors in the beginning happened because of tightness, a little nervousness. We have ties to the team.”

Players and coaches are friends with some of the Braves, Angelos said. But it was Angelos herself who had to focus even more as she played against her twin sister, Amy, for the first time, with a crowd stacked with family and friends.

“It was probably pretty emotional for them, but I thought she did a good job,” Gooden said of Angelos’ performance. “She did a good job catching the ball to block and scored a couple of points.”

Mary Kurisch, sophomore middle blocker, led the team with 14 kills and seven blocks, while senior libero Maddie Hughes added 18 digs.

The Huskies travel east this weekend to University of Illinois at Chicago for tournament action.
