Men’s Rugby stats strong at SIU

The NIU men’s rugby team performed another strong outing this past weekend at the SIU All Fools Classic.

In their second tournament of the season, the Huskies (2-0) finished in third place with a 4-1 record. NIU defeated Western Illinois 11-0, Illinois 22-3 and won its third match by forfeit to complete group play. The semifinals proved a tough test for the Huskies as they lost 18-5 to eventual tournament champion, Champaign County.

“I think we came out strong and then didn’t do as well in the third game that we ended up losing,” said NIU Men’s Rugby President Al Collins. “We just came out a little too flat. I still think we’re in pretty good shape where we are. I’m still pretty optimistic.”

Hockey

Almost two months after the conclusion of the NIU hockey season, junior forward and captain Peter Alfano took part in the American Collegiate Hockey Association All-Star Challenge.

Alfano competed with the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association team as it went 3-2 this past weekend in West Chester, Penn. Alfano scored one goal with three assists during the five games.

Women’s Rugby

The women’s rugby match against Palmer Chiropractic turned into a social after many members of the team were unable to compete.

“I do not even know the score, and our team had honestly seen better days,” said Jen Studer, NIU women’s rugby team president. “I know after a tough week of practice the team will bounce back.”

The Huskies’ next match will be this weekend when they take on University of Chicago at home.
