NIU students hit the runway

Students looking to get involved in the fashion world or who are looking for a makeover for the fall semester should participate in the Fashion Industries Organization.

FIO is a student organization in the School of Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences and is open for anyone who is interested in areas of textiles, apparel and merchandising, saidStephanie Conlin, senior textile, apparel and merchandising and marketing major. She is also president of FIO.

Conlin said FIO does not have any plans for this summer, but once the fall semester begins, the organization will allow for students to get involved in a variety of opportunities.

The organization allows for members to take part in community service, fashion shows, makeovers, listen to speakers in the field and attend fashion forum career day.

Conlin said the organization goes to the fashion forum career day event in Chicago during the fall. While there, members can go to different workshops and learn about the fashion industry.

“It’s a place for us to talk about clothes and to learn about different careers,” Conlin said.

FIO recently participated in the glass slipper project where members became personal shoppers for inner city girls as they helped them purchase dresses for prom.

FIO is open to all majors not just textile, apparel and merchandising majors.

Tyler Brown, senior textile, apparel and merchandising major and publicity spokesperson for FIO, said he joined the organization because of his interest in fashion. He saw the group as an opportunity to learn about the industry.

“It is simply for anyone who loves fashion and who wants to get tips on networking, volunteer work and how to survive in this industry,” Brown said.

Conlin said FIO received a $5,000 grant from Target for the organization to put on a leadership development event for the fall semester. The event will allow alumni to return and to talk about their experience in their careers. An alumnus who works as a stylist for the Hallmark Channel will discuss their career and their achievements.
