The family of the woman who killed herself while in a visitation room at the DeKalb County Jail has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against DeKalb County and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office

.

David Brantley, the father of the deceased Brandi L. Brantley, filed the lawsuit April 9 alleging DeKalb County and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were negligent in preventing her death, according to court documents.

On April 14, a motion was filed by David Brantley to disclose the videotape of the room his daughter was in at the time of her death.

The documents state Brantley and his lawyer have asked DeKalb County State’s Attorney Ron Matekaitis to view the tape, but Matekaitis “refuses to permit such viewing and/or produce a certified copy of the video until some later date, through the normal course of discovery.”

Attempts to contact Matekaitis’ office were unsuccessful as of press time.

On April 16, Judge William Brady ordered the surveillance tapes to be handed over to a deputy clerk “until further order of [the] Court.”

Brandi Brantley, who was waiting to be booked into the jail, was found unconscious under a blanket with a telephone cord wrapped around her neck at the DeKalb County Jail April 3.

Her cause of death was later ruled by asphyxiation from hanging by DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.
