The ballot order for the DeKalb School Board election on April 7 has been set. Five people will run for three positions on the board.

There are a total of seven positions on the board, including a board president, vice president, board secretary and four board members.

According to the district’s Web site, a drawing had to take place to determine the ballot order because more than one candidate filed simultaneously.

Board President Mike Verbic is one of the candidates up for re-election.

“I’m hopeful to continue serving the taxpayers of the DeKalb School District,” Verbic said.

Board Member Michael Lord is also running for re-election. Lord was a mid-term replacement for Jennifer Hayes and has served since June 2007.

“My work on the school board has been devoted to creating positive, educational and meaningful experiences for my two children as well as all the kids in the school district,” Lord said. “My election to the DeKalb School Board will allow me to continue my service to the community.”

Vice President Andy Small is the third member whose term is expiring, but has chosen not to run again.

“I feel confident that I am stepping away at a time when the district in heading in a positive direction,” Small said. “I now look forward to spending more time with my family and perhaps getting involved with other worthy causes.”

Verbic said the board chooses a new president, vice president and secretary after every election.

“A person will make a motion to nominate someone for president, vice president or secretary,” Verbic said. “If there is a second [motion] the board would then vote to appoint that person.”

School board elections are held every two years with members serving four-year terms. Those elected to the board this year will serve until 2013.
