The fifth season of the ABC show is set to kick off its three-hour season premiere tonight at 7 p.m. With the fourth season leaving viewers with many cliffhangers to mull over for a couple of months, let’s re-examine what happened last season.

The Oceanic Six: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Sayid and infant Aaron were on a helicopter (along with Frank and Desmond) when they watched the island disappear. In order to protect the people that were left on the island, the six decide that they must lie to the public about the plane crash and all the events that followed.

The other passengers on Oceanic Flight 815 were also caught up in plot twists. Sawyer, in an effort to help save those on the helicopter, jumped into the ocean. Ben followed Jacob’s orders and moved the island. However, since he was the one that moved the island, he will never be able to return.

Locke, now the leader of the Others, was shown in the final scene of season four inside of a casket, presumably dead. Jin and Michael have supposedly perished because they were on the boat when it exploded. Claire’s whereabouts are still unknown, but Jack now knows that they have the same father.

Kate is being threatened by lawyers, so she and Aaron are fleeing their home. Although Jack says Kate will not go, the teasers lead viewers to believe otherwise. A female voice, presumably Claire’s, orders Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island. After Claire’s disappearance, Kate was left in charge of the then-infant Aaron. Now that Claire appears to be back in the picture, Kate’s decision-making seems restricted.

Another individual who does not seem to want to go back is Sun. In the season four finale, she told Mr. Widmore (Penny’s father) that he is one of the two people responsible for her husband’s death. She also blames Jack because he would not order Frank to turn the helicopter around.

Hurley and Sayid are the only two who seem to be convinced that their presence is required on the island. Various teasers show Sayid continuing his killing spree for Ben while Hurley rushes to get back.

“LOST” is known for its complex and unpredictable storyline and season five looks as if it will exceed expectations. The teasers on the ABC Web site reintroduce the questions lingering from season four. Apparently, all six of the survivors need to return to the island. After the island moved and the survivors left, tragedy occurred. Convincing everyone to go back, however, will be a challenge an eager Jack and Ben need to overcome.

This season will be one of the best for this hit drama. There are no polar bears in the jungle this time, but there are obvious questions.

The show started in 2004 with 48 survivors from a suspicious plane crash. They were all thought to be random people and it was assumed that each were on that exact flight for a random reason. As the seasons progressed, it became clear that maybe the crash and all the events that followed weren’t a coincidence. Teasers suggest that destiny is a big theme for this season.

Although a lot of mystery surrounds “LOST,” one thing is certain: Season five will start tonight with unexpected plot twists sure to leave viewers wanting more.
