Honors Program, Hope Haven to sponsor clothing drive

The Honors Program wants your clothes.

The Honors Program and Hope Haven are teaming up for a clothing drive tonight at the Douglas C/D cafeteria. The drive will begin at 7 p.m., and students who donate will be able to enjoy hot cocoa and baked goods provided by the Honors Program.

Sophomore biology major Cole Lightfoot is one of the Honors House leaders who helped organize the event.

“We like the charitable nature of what we can do,” Lightfoot said. “We get to have fun and also help the community.”

With the holiday season officially in full stride, Lightfoot said he believes the clothing drive is a great way to celebrate.

“Just think of how lucky we are to be able to have an educational opportunity,” Lightfoot said. “I think people who take the time to donate clothes will feel good through the holiday season.”

The Honors Program already has a jump start. Honors Program coordinator Kate Braser said she already has a box of clothes donated by students who won’t be able to attend tonight’s drive.

Braser agrees with Lightfoot on the personal reward that donating clothes will bring.

“Everyone’s budgets are a little tighter this year,” Braser said. “At the same time, those of us that can afford an education are blessed to maybe have some extra clothing that may not be used.”

Braser also said donating is a great way to clear some space in someone’s house.

“It’s a good way to clean out the closet,” Braser said. “You’re also helping people who can really use those things.”
