SA to send support to U. of Central Arkansas

The Student Association met Sunday evening to discuss the topics of the school shooting in Arkansas, the vacant SA Supreme Court and the approval of two student organizations.

Of the senators, 28 out of 39 were in attendance, including the SA President Brent Keller.

At the beginning of the meeting, Speaker of the Senate Matthew Venaas amended the agenda to pass a resolution for the SA to show and send support to the University of Central Arkansas after two students were shot and killed and one was injured.

“It’s exceedingly unfortunate that they now join the small group of colleges and schools that had to suffer similar things and it is the full intent of this administration that we will support them as much as we can in the coming weeks and this is the first step in doing that,” Keller said.

The vacant SA Supreme Court was also addressed. The graduation of all of last year’s supreme court justices has left the court vacant. Keller introduced former SA Senator Aaron Funfsinn as the first applicant to be considered for appointment as a supreme court justice.

“It’s something I’ve had interest in with the rules and the law,” Funfsinn said. “I’m a law student this year and I’m actually putting more effort towards studying complex rules.”

Two student organizations were approved at the meeting included S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking Action Now in Darfur) and the Disc Golf Club.

S.T.A.N.D. is an anti-genocide student coalition that promotes awareness of the plight of the Sudanese in Darfur by hosting speakers, fundraisers and educational outreach programs.

“I’m glad we got approved, they came at us a little, which I thought was surprising, but I thought we’d get approved anyway,” said Ryan Beebe, the vice president of the group.

The Disc Golf Club is a group for the popular sport, Frisbee golf. Together they organize outings and look to coordinate the improvement of the local Frisbee golf course in Prairie Park.

“I’m glad we’re approved, actually I anticipated being approved being that there is no Disc Golf Club on campus and now we’ll be able to go out and promote the club, promote the sport and hopefully bring a lot of new members in,” said Mike Spychal, president of the Disc Golf Club.

The next SA meeting will be at 6 p.m. next Sunday at the Sky Room in the Holmes Student Center.
