Movie has lots of ‘Soul’

By TONY MARTIN

‘Soul’ Men stars Bernie Mac, Samuel L. Jackson and Isaac Hayes.

The Plot: Two ex-bandmates come back together after many estranged years apart to perform at a tribute concert for their recently deceased lead singer. Hilarity ensues.

The Good: Though a lot of the humor was predictable and kind of lame, the story was decent, and Mac and Jackson had a decent rapport on screen. This being Mac’s swan-song performance, it may have been his career best. Also, my inherent bias toward Jackson scores this movie some major points, as his comedic delivery is always hilarious. The highlight of this buddy comedy was indeed the music. The songs the duo performed themselves were pretty good, and the score itself was awesome. I was tapping my feet in the theater during the movie.

The Bad: “Soul Men” would have been much better if everyone in the audience didn’t know the jokes before they came. Had it not been for the performances of the two stars, the entire film would have been as bad as a Seann William Scott movie. Understand that the movie did have some good jokes and some great scenes, but all in all, if the writing was just a bit better and well-polished, it would have been more enjoyable.

The Lowdown: This is really just another forgettable comedy movie. These movies come out all the time, and nobody remembers them in five years. This is not a knock on “Soul Men” directly, but it fails to live up to anything beyond casual interest. Unless you are a super fan of any of the specific actors here, you can wait to see this one.

Just wait until it shows up on Comedy Central at 2 p.m. on a Sunday. Odds are “Soul Men” will be there soon.
